Mission Statement

UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and Charles R. Drew University Departments of Psychiatry and Family Medicine have created a Social Medicine Collab using the Human Center Design process to engage transitional-aged youth 18-25 in South Los Angeles to interact in their communities using human center design workshops as a teaching tool.

The Collab’s goal is to partner with South Los Angeles community organizations and the youth that they serve to develop new ways to deliver care, addressing the whole person, including holistic care, and building an evidence base around social care. This may involve providing medical care onsite at youth-serving organizations using Drew’s mobile health vans and co- sponsoring health-related programs involving the arts, sports, or social events. Applying human center design methodology, Collab will offer design workshops with the youth and staff of the community organizations to identify priority health concerns to deliver care and prevention holistically and creatively. The overall goal is to practice medicine differently, very health equity-focused with the end goal being to mitigate the damaging outcomes of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
